Choosing the Correct Inside the Waistband (IWB) Holster

Posted by

There are many types of inside the waistband (IWB) concealment holsters to choose from. You can choose leather holsters, Kydex holsters, or hybrid holsters (mix of leather and Kydex). Once you decide which material is better suited to your needs, you then need to decide which style would work out the best for you. This can be difficult unless you have tried all the different styles, which can get very expensive. At Blue Line Concealment we have a few different styles of our inside the waistband holsters. I will discuss the features of each of the styles and hopefully assist you in making the correct decision.

Belt Clip IWB Holster

Belt Clip Holster

This holster is made from .06” thick Kydex and attaches to the belt with an injection molded belt clip. The belt clip slides over the belt and has a “V” hook on the bottom which locks under the belt. This keeps the holster in place when drawing the weapon from the holster. The belt clip is extremely durable and, if somehow damaged, can be easily replaced without sending the holster in for repair. The holster includes an adjustable retention screw in front of the trigger guard. Any Kydex holster can have the retention adjusted with a hair dryer or heat gun but the retention just makes it much quicker and easier to do. Some people like to adjust the retention differently based upon the activity they will be performing with the holster at any given time. The standard cut holster covers the entire slide of the weapon on the body-side of the holster to protect against damage from sweat and body oils. The holster can also be ordered in a minimalist cut, in which it is cut lower on the body-side of the holster. This cut is only suggested on guns that will not rust when exposed to sweat (such as Glock handguns). The muzzle end of the weapon is fully covered by the holster unless specifically requested otherwise. The retention point is placed in the trigger guard which, in our opinion, produces the smoothest draw and offers the most protection against holster wear. The cant of the holster is set at approximately 10 degrees, but any other desired cant may be substituted if requested. We will occasionally, depending on the size of the gun ordered, increase the cant of the holster to provide better concealment. The more cant on the holster, the less “imprint” of the grip of the gun on the concealment garment.

Hard Loop IWB Holster

Hard Loop Holster

This holster is made from .06” thick Kydex and attaches to the belt with an injection molded “P” loop. The loop slides over the top of the belt and completely circles the belt, with a “J” hook on the bottom to lock the holster in place when drawing the weapon. These loops are extremely durable and can also be replaced if damaged. Replacement is a little more difficult in the sense that the holster would have to be sent in for repair or the holes would have to be drilled upon receiving the replacement loop. Any retention adjustments must be done by heating the trigger guard area of the holster with a heat gun or hair dryer and adjusting as needed. Due to the fact that is there is one narrow attachment point on the belt, the cant of this holster can be set when you place the holster in the waistband. The weapon tends to stay in place where it is originally set. If the holster shifts at all, it easily adjusted to the desired position without displaying the weapon. The holster does not sit as deep as the belt clip holster, it provides for a full combat grip when drawing the weapon. The standard cut holster is the same as the belt clip holster with regards to a full sweat shield and full muzzle coverage.

Soft Loop IWB Holster

Soft Loop Holster

This holster is made from .06” thick Kydex and attaches to the belt with vinyl coated nylon loop. The loop attaches over the top of the belt with a “Pull-The-Dot” snap. This snap was chosen due to te fact that it can be snapped and unsnapped only from the top of the snap. This prevents the snap from being accidentally disengaged by the belt. The loop is atahced to a .125” Kydex “strut”, which in turn attaches to the holster with 2 screws. The loop and/or strut can be replaced if damaged. The depth of the holster can be adjusted by unscrewing the loop and moving it down on the strut. The strut includes 2 or 3 height adjustment holes, dependent upon weapon size. The standard cut holster is the same as the belt clip holster with regards to a full sweat shield and full muzzle coverage.
